MakeZine.com: For the do-it-yourself geek

O'Reilly strikes back with a 'zine for the technology do-it-yourself equivalent. Not sure if this applies to you? Take the following test to see if you should subscribe to MAKE's RSS feed:

You haven't just heard of overclocking, you compete in overclocking events.

Making parallel port disco lights sounds like a good idea.

Installing SLAX on an iPod Nano means something to you.

You've already made a vacuum bazooka - or want to learn how.

You can find a use for an 11,000 volt taser cannon.

So you see, it isn't just for the computer hacker, it's for the everything hacker. MAKE has free/paid content (you can subscribe to their mook) and generally has fun stuff to read.

Gapers Block - Rubbernecking in Chicago

Next time you're in Chicago, wondering what's going on in the Windy City, I suggest you check out Gapers Block for a look into news and events about town. They're our choice for today's Feed of the Day, because: (a) they're about Chicago and (b) they have an interesting name.

So, what does "Gapers Block" mean? Thankfully the authors don't keep the joke to themselves, but provide a glimpse into their motivation - and who's behind the news and views. Anyhow, gapers block is Chicago's version of rubbernecking, often applied to idiots in cars who make traffic worse (and make me even later) as they look at accidents. Jerks.

As for the web publication, consider this one rubbernecking with permission. Bandwidth isn't much of a problem these days, so feel free to pause and take a look.

Oh, if you don't understand the naming conventions of their RSS feeds, you didn't rubberneck properly. Go back and try again.

Microsoft Professional Developers Conference - PDC to the engineers and pundits

So PDC wrapped up last week, with lots of new(ish) stuff from Microsoft discussed and demoed. If you missed it you can download a truckload of PowerPoint presentations <sarcasm on> Yay! More slides!</sarcasm off> but you'll need to login via passport first (found under "Session Downloads").

For today's Feed of the Day, we've chosen the "What We're Watching" from Channel 9, because it's the most current and ongoing discussion of PDC-related technology and news.

Kung Fu Monkey: Strong Kung Fu

Actually, it's "Gong Fu." But decades of pronunciation means that "kung fu" is the phrase of choice. I mean, what would happen if someone said, "My Gong Fu" is stronger than yours?"

Confusion. Lots of it.

Since our Kung Fu took the day off yesterday, we thought Kung Fu Monkey would be a nice way to finish the week . . . and give us a clear reason to post this picture.

The title of the blog in no way gives away the content. Definitely hard to classify as anything other than "a blog," although "stream of consciousness with a bit about writing" works reasonably well. Sure, the occasional political post fits in their somewhere, but without the serious ranting and raving found just about everywhere else.

The author, John Rogers, is "unfocused" (his claim), having previously done stand-up comedy, earned a physics degree (lots of funny physicists out there, I'm sure), before following scientist career path into writing scripts for television and movies.

In case you're an aspiring writer, you may want to check out a few posts on how it all works in Hollywood: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The series (and other related "about writing" topics probably continue, but Blogger seems to have missed categorical or tag-organized posts. Perhaps they'll notice the world outside Google-land and fix it. Or not. Dare to be different, I guess.

Cheers.

The Movie Blog. Reasons not to cry for Hollywood. Plus a Google movie trick.

In case you missed the never-ending whining by Hollywood that box-office receipts are down, the summer movie season has been really bad (again), and generally complaining that too many people are playing World of Warcraft (accompanied by the infamous Leroy Jenkins battle cry) instead of going to the theaters and overpaying for tickets, popcorn, and generally suffering through crappy scripts and Kevin Costner-length movies (like this sentence) . . . we won't really talk about those things here. But just know that Hollywood is whiny about not selling enough tickets after paying millions to make more "must see" movies.

If you actually made it through that run-on sentence, you deserve a reward.

Of course, today's Feed of the Day - The Movie Blog - is a reward of its own with opinions, reviews, comments, and other stuff about what's playing at the big and not-so-big screen. Since the three "regular contributors" (John Campea, Doug Nagy, and Richard Brunton) love writing about movies, their blog might just be a nice lifehack to save you the time and trouble of another Waterworld debacle (it really was a dumb movie, you know). Oh, the gem at the left is from an image search on Waterworld and has no relation to the movie, except other than looking really fake, the bully has the type of dorky helmet clearly essential to survival in a post-apocalyptic world. Whatever.

One quick excerpt from a recent post:

How to Use Google Movies for Reviews and Show Times

Not
only am I a "Movie Dork", but I'm also a "Computer Dork" -which makes
it difficult picking up women at times- and I wanted to bring Google's
movie tag to your attention. This may be old hat for some of you but
it's still a fairly new feature to the Google search and I find it very useful.

When doing a Google search on a movie title, place the following tag before it (movie:). For example, if you want to read the reviews for Superman, then you would type in (movie: Superman). This will return all of the reviews for Superman collected by the Google index, the star rating and a total average rating bases on the results.

Google movies can also search for show times within your area . . .

Urban Dictionary. Who defines your language?

Wiki-styled Urban Dictionary is a user-developed, defined, and refined dictionary where relevance is determined by freshness and user voting.

What?

It's a slang-styled dictionary and you (or anyone else) can define meanings of words/phrases, in addition to voting on the accuracy/worth of other people's definitions. Consider Urban Dictionary a cultural reference - as new words/phrases become cool/common, you may want to look here to see what the new language is all about.

Or not. Remember, it's a wiki, so quality is directly tied to the knowledge/accuracy/intent/motive of the author. For example, consider how economics is defined by a few users*:

Definition 1: The study of choice in the face of scarcity.
Example 1: Ignorant people who post idiotic definitions have scarce resources.Definition 3: The study of fufilling ones unlimited wants using the Earth's limited resources.
Example 3: "It's pure economics! Since our resource of TV writers is scarce, we're stuck with crappy reality shows!"

Or, check out the definition of engineer:

Definition 7: An accredited psychopath. Psychopathic tendencies are not usely inherent, but emerge after the proto-engineer (see: student) has been run through courses like statics, thermodynamics, and circuits.

Example 7: The difference between a psychopath and an engineer is that one has a degree.

One more, the definition of spelling:

Definition 2: What people are incapable of doing on the Internet.
 Example 2: It's "you," not "u." IT'S ONLY 2 MORE CHARACTERS.

With that, we'll wish you a good day - and give you the Urban Dictionary Daily feed.

Google Launches Their Feed/Blog Search

This has been all over the news today --- Google just launched their "blog" search engine, complete with "search feeds" and everything else we'd expect from Google, except perhaps an integrated RSS Reader.

I certainly have nothing to complain about, as my sites practically own the "rss marketing" search ... although I'm on on top for most of the other keywords I'm targeting.

But that's really not the point. There's something more interesting and perhaps somewhat funny to discuss here:

"The goal of Blog Search is to include every blog that publishes a site feed (either RSS or Atom). It is not restricted to Blogger blogs, or blogs from any other service."

Hmmm ... now, how does Google really know what's a blog and what isn't? I'm guessing there might be some algorithms that can help identify blogs, but how can they be sure?

Or, which is actually somewhat worrying, are they equating blog search with RSS feed search, as their own description might imply?

If this is search based on feeds, why not just mark it as such?

Why?

Well, simply because RSS can carry so much more content than just blog posts ...

Marketing Optimization 101 for Blogs

Truth be told, most blogs aren't really optimized for marketing effectiveness. Even more so, some blogs are absolute marketing machines, but they at the same time fail to fully capitalize on that fact by not being really optimized marketing-wise.

Blogs may be Web 2.0, but bloggers should not ignore some of the good old internet direct marketing tactics that have been working for marketers online almost for a decade or more.

Here are the absolute 101 basics you really shouldn't ignore ...

1. Don't Forget E-mail Delivery

Bloggers are often abandoning or completely ignoring e-mail as a tool to deliver their content to their readers. As an RSS evangelist I certainly believe in using RSS to get your content to the world, but only as a supplement to e-mail delivery.

While RSS provides us with many unique benefits, it is yet to reach mainstream adoption. Until it does, marketers and publishers should not even consider abandoning e-mail delivery, or risk ignoring most of their potential readership.

If you're still wondering why you need e-mail, consider the potential you might be wasting without it. Someone visits your blog, likes the content and would like to be notified as new content of interest becomes available, and he does not know what RSS is or even care. If you fail to capture his e-mail address and consent at that exact moment, he might never again return to your site, either because he forgets about it or because dozens of other sites capture his interest even before the next day.

2. E-zine Publishing is Still a Must

Publishing a blog is not a replacement for an e-zine. If nothing else, publish a weekly or monthly e-zine of your top blog posts, available in a single easy-to-consume format.

Some simply do not have the time to watch your blog regularly and others will only want to receive a quick summary to get only your best and most crucial content. Publishing an e-mail e-zine will do that for you, giving you the opportunity to communicate with the widest possible long-term audience for your blog.

3. E-mail and RSS Subscriptions

Providing e-mail (e-zine) and RSS subscriptions is important to the success of any blog. But neither of these will do you much good if your visitors don't actually see them and if you don't give them enough incentive to subscribe.

Foremost, display your e-mail e-zine and RSS subscriptions information at the top of your blog, instead of somewhere far down where no one will see them.

And second, use enticing copy to get visitors to subscribe. Briefly explain the benefits of subscribing, what kind of content they can expect to receive, and also do not forget about your privacy disclaimer, calming potential subscribers that you will never abuse their personal information.

4. Explain RSS

Most internet users still do not know what RSS is or how to use it, and consequently the RSS buttons on your blog mean absolutely nothing to them.

To overcome this problem, create a special RSS presentation page and link to it next to the RSS subscribe button. On that page explain:

- What RSS is
- How the visitor will benefit from using RSS
- Where they can get a free RSS aggregator (recommend one yourself!)
- How they can install it (provide step-by-step instructions)
- How they can subscribe to your RSS feeds
- Why they should subscribe to your own RSS feeds

Then, on this same page, include the links to all of your RSS feeds.

5. Top Content

If you update your blog frequently, your less recent top content keeps being pushed down and down, where most of your blog readers will never bother to look for it.

Overcome this frequent blog problem by creating a list of your top posts, clearly displayed and available from each of your pages. Depending on the topic you cover, you might want to place these headlines as close to the top of your blog as possible, in order to quickly entice your new visitors to start reading the best of what you have to offer and then use this content to convert them to loyal readers and subscribers.

6. The Headline

The site or blog headline will tell your visitors what to expect from reading your blog and will answer their key question: "What's in it for me?"

Make sure that your blog headlines gives this reason and the story inviting enough for your readers to keep reading.

7. Lead Your Visitors to Your MDA

MDA is the Most Desired Action you want your visitors to take on your site, ranging from a subscription to your e-zine to requesting more information about your services or ordering your product / getting more information about it.

Your blog will be of great help in this area, but only if you actually lead your visitors to this action. Putting this information in your menu simply is not enough.

Experiment putting some copy for your MDA directly below each blog post (on your permanent blog post archives pages) and also prominently in your left- or right-hand columns.

If you're providing multiple services or products, promote each of them next to the appropriate posts, based on post topics.

And yes, this is more important than having dozens of Google AdSense ads on your blog ... if you want to use your blog as part of your marketing mix.

8. Look Different

Blogs are usually not heavily designed and most of them look exactly the same. While light design is one of the positive sides of blogs, you should invest some effort in making your blog stand-out visually. Don't cram it with design, but still make sure it's different than every other blog in the market.

9. Use Your Own Domain

Having a subdomain.typepad.com type sub-domain might be the easiest choice, but don't forget that your domain name is your permanent online address and part of your online brand.

Consequently, invest a couple of dollars to get your own domain name, to enforce your brand, as well as making it easier for your readers to access your blog.

10. Don't Forget Your Keywords

What keywords do you want your content and blog to be found under in the search engines?

Don't forget to implement these keywords in the titles and body content of your blog posts. I'm not saying you should write your posts to please the search engines, but at least keep them in mind and use them when possible, without taking anything away from the actual content.

11. Interact With Your Readers

If you're blogging for business, don't forget about business oriented reader interaction.

Mainly, solicit questions from your readers, pertaining to your field of expertise, and then respond to them via your blog. Post interesting client case studies. When you get a review, post it or link to it. And so on ...

12. Blog Specific Promotional Tactics 101

a] Intensively market your RSS feeds

b] Ping the search engines and directories after you update your blog, using a free service such as http://www.pingomatic.com

13. Don't Forget About the Content

And of course, none of the above won't make any difference at all if you don't provide high-quality, interesting and frequent content.

These 13 points are of course only the most basic stuff, but enough to help you get on the marketing optimization train.

The RSS Vendors Space

Richard MacMannus takes a good look at the RSS vendors space, giving special attention to the search category.

I was especially interested in reading his break-down of the RSS publisher services vendors:

Publisher Services
Sub-categories: Content; Analytics; Feed Mgmt; Advertising
Examples: Feedburner; Nooked; Pheedo; SimpleFeed; Syndicate IQ

Nice break-down, Richard, although it could use some further sub-categorizing in the feed management area.

Richard also notes this category as especially interesting, since "The Big 3" (Yahoo!, Microsoft, Google) have shown little interest here. I'm almost willing to bet they won't, since the market isn't as attractive as the mass end-user market. Also, if the e-mail world is an indication, this space will be owned by niche players, focusing especially on this category.

A Challenge to the RSS Industry: RSS Stats Unacceptable

Forrester Research released the final "The State Of Consumers And Technology: Benchmark 2005" report on August 2nd, which claims that only 2% of Americans online use RSS, based on a survey of more than 68,000 American households.

These numbers are of course underpreciated, as the data only includes the people that are knowingly using RSS, and not the internet users that might not even know they are subscribing to feeds, as they are using services such as My.Yahoo!, which already fully integrated RSS.

So how relevant is the 2% figure?

Let's simply take a look at some of the more recent stats released by various research companies and others, pertaining to the adoption and use of RSS.

87% of influencers use RSS (Nooked)
Only 3% of Internet users use RSS (Jupiter Research)
11% of blog readers use RSS (Nielsen/NetRatings)
Only 2% of all Americans online use RSS (Forrester Research)
9% of Americans have a good idea of what RSS is (PEW)
12% of all Americans online use a variety of RSS readers (Jupiter Research)
5% of Americans online use RSS (PEW)

It seems that no one can really agree on how many people are really using RSS, knowingly or unknowingly.

For marketers, the situation is nearning the unacceptable phase, with no one really knowing how adopted RSS really is. Which report and research company should we trust?

Perhaps it's really time for us to stop worrying about the research statistics and ask the people who should know best: providers of RSS aggregators, desktop and web-based, and other RSS services.

NewsGator and FeedDemon, Yahoo!, Pluck, Attensa, Bloglines, FireFox, Pheedo, Nooked, Syndicate IQ and others ... please save us of our misery --> start providing some real-life numbers on how many people are really using RSS.

This is not simply a desire of one marketer, but the need of the entire industry, which cannot continue developing until we have some reliable numbers from the actual source on how much adoption RSS has achieved.

Please help us!

RSS Just Became More Secure and Thus More Appropriate for Enterprise Implementation

eWeek.com and internetnews.com report that RSS just became more secure and thus more appropriate for wider enterprise use.

Even though there was already much done in the area of feed security, especially from the likes of MyST Technology Partners, the latest developments in the field finally promise to provide the security needed to transfer even the most sensitive data, such as credit card statements and similar.

These developments come from Reactivity, a company claiming to have developed the first really secure way of handling XML content. Their XML infrastructure is said to enable users access, securely transport and encrypt RSS feeds.

internetnews.com lists just one of highly compelling scenarios for future RSS uses, finally enabled by more security:

In one scenario, customers might like to get notification from his credit card company when a transaction has cleared.

"I'd like to know about it soon because if someone is buying surf boards in my name in Hawaii, I'm probably going to spot it way sooner than any of the Visa folks are going to, with all of their correlative tracking software," Nash said in an interview. "They do a great job but it's still like days before they know what's going on."

With RSS, the customer would know sooner rather than later, Nash said. This provides customers with enough time to react and halt the spending spree.

And the first real application is already behind the corner. SimpleFeed is leading the development of a new service for a U.S. bank, which will start delivering RSS notifications to customers when their online bank statements are available.

Their client however wants to wait before thinking of sending any real financial data, as the security model still needs to be proved and verified.

Russia is Now RSS Enabled

This news comes at great pleasure for me and all marketers trying to establish a presence in one of the largest markets in the world, Russia.

Word just got out that their key search engine and portal also offers RSS aggregation to its users, according to the Search Engine Journal.

This is a clear sign that RSS in fact will quickly go beyond U.S. borders, although adoption is taking somewhat longer than anticipated. As more and more local search engines and portals start adopting RSS, so will the internet users in those countries.

One of the primary drivers of RSS adoption in the U.S. was without doubt the inclussion of RSS aggregation services in to My.Yahoo! With local European portals and search engines doing the same, RSS will finally come to other parts of the world as well.

This is certainly something to celebrate.

Helping Katrina Victims ... I Don't Understand

There are many things I don't understand about our world.

I don't understand why, today of all ages, disasters like this cannot be foretold in advance.

How can we create weapons capable of destroying the world many times over, but can do nothing about such disasters until it's too late?

Watching the media today, I don't understand why New Orleans mayor has to be pleading for help for the hurricane victims.

I don't understand why even after the hurricane people are still trapped in unbelievable circumstances.

I don't understand how the strongest army in the world cannot save these people.

I don't understand how human beings can kill one another and steal from one another in such crisis, even stopping the rescue efforts. And I don't understand, why they cannot be stopped.

I don't understand why, in such circumstances, hospitals under fire cannot be protected by a standing army.

I don't understand why doctors saving lives have to fear for their own lives, endangered by the mob.

I just don't understand.

How can we help these people and make this world just a little easier to understand?

Here are some links to sites with lists of what you can do to help.

Survey: Tangible Marketing Results from Blogging Only With Frequent Posting

Small business marketing expert John Jantsch just released the numbers for a survey he did on blogging, on a sample of 488 small business owners.

Interesting results, which in the end show how important regular posting is to generating tangible business results from blogging activities.

a] Only 37% publish a blog and 57% actually have no plans of implementing one in the near future.

b] Of those that do blog, 27% post less than once per month. At the same time 36% claimed that their blogging produced no marketing results whatsover.

c] Those that said they posted anywhere from 3 times a week to once a day are actually seeing hard results. "39 percent claimed that search engine traffic grew, 18 percent stated that leads were generated and 11 percent could attribute sales activity directly to their blog." These bloggers also claimed that blogging increased their "expert status" in their industry.

A blogging survey was also recently done and the results released yesterday by Debbie Weil, the authority on business blogging, based on a sample of 706 subscribers to her e-zine.

Before we go in to details here we do need to understand that since Debbie's core business is blogging, that also reflects on the knowledge and acceptance levels of her readers and subscribers.

"In response to a WordBiz survey, 65% cite "the time it would take to write" as their most important concern about starting and maintaining a corporate blog. 51% worry what to write about. 27% wonder who in their company should write the blog.

Despite these legitimate concerns, 80% of the over 700 respondents say blogs are NOT just a fad; 55% say blogs will become a "must-have" corporate marketing tool. The survey was conducted in July and August 2005 through my newsletter, WordBiz Report."

Debbie also asked two RSS-related questions.

a] To the question "Have you downloaded an RSS newsreader (or subscribed to a Web-based RSS service)?" 46% respondents replied "yes".

b] Only 34,7% have subscribed to blogs using RSS.

This data is not surprising and only shows that even bloggers still need to deliver their content via e-mail as well, using RSS as a supplement and not as a replacement.

More great info on Debbie's site.

Podcasting Monetization Strategies #2: Publishers

2. Publishers and Direct Monetization of Podcasting

To my marketing-infested mind, the possibilities for publishers are quite obvious, with the most traditional and generic being either monetization through ad sales or monetization through content access sales / subscriptions.

a] Smaller market players with small mid-value listenership, reaching mostly general audiences, might find their profits come through podcasting-oriented ad networks or perhaps even content networks providing access to multiple podcasts for a small subscription fee.

b] Large players reaching the masses or small players reaching high-value niche audiences will surely be able to sell their ad venues via their own sales forces or specialized media planning/buying agencies, perhaps even via large traditional ad agencies.

InformationWeek lists a good example:

PodSafe Music, created by PodShow Inc., sells ad placements in its podcasts to Absolut Spirits Co. "We mention vodka at the start of a podcast," PodSafe site manager C.C. Chapman says. "Absolut lets us do our own thing."

And according to a case study done by MarketingSherpa, GoToMeeting actually found that podcasting sponsorships have done very well in their integrated ad campaigns, with overwhelming responses.

c] These same publishers might also get away with subscription sales, provided they can offer unique content not easily available elsewhere.

It however remains to be seen whether listeners will be prepared to pay for podcast access. As noted by InformationWeek, a recent European young consumers study by Forrester Research found that 46% of 16- and 17-year-olds would consider paying for podcast content, while only 33% of those surveyed would accept advertising in podcasts.

It's clear that people will always be willing to pay for unique high quality content.

But are young consumers among those willing to pay? History shows that regardless of what anyone says, most consumers still preferr advertising over having to pay for content.

d] Other publishers, especially independant or smaller publishers using direct marketing tactics to facilitate sales, might generate revenues by providing podcasts in combination with their other products --> selling packaged access or offering podcasts as bonuses upon purchase.

Practicing Kaizen?

When I was a small boy, my Grandfather was one of the first people to buy a Toyota in our area. It was a rather unremarkable little tin box.

Being full of exuberance, and prone to irrationality, as all young boys are, I propmptly took to body checking the side of it.

To my amazement and shock, my slight frame put a sizable dent in the door. Flimsy, poorly designed doors were just one of its many imperfections.

Thankfully I did not get too bad of a beating over my little hockey inspired indiscretion. If I had, I might not have become such an avid fan and owner of that little rattletraps progeny.

What was the incredible secret that allowed the Toyota Motor Company to leverage this little tin box into a hugely profitable North American business within just a short period of time?

FeedDigest: An Excellent RSS Radar or NewMastering Tool

I spent some more time with FeedDigest, the tool that helps you display syndicated content on your sites and mix multiple feeds together, and discovered it actually offers much more under the hood than I first anticipated.

The problem the first time was simple: they hide the best features under some very difficult to spot links. But once you really start paying attention you discover that FeedDigest really is a powerful RSS radar creation tool.

a] You start creating your RSS radar by entering the first feed URL in to the new digest form.

b] You're immediately taken to a page with advanced settings:

Basic information, such as digest name.
Item ordering settings and the max number of items to show.
Filtering capabilities, hidden behind a link (you can filter the multiple feeds you're mixing with a search string).
International settings, if you'll be mixing feeds in languages other than English.
Template selection, to define in what HTML template you want the content from the feeds to be displayed in. The best feature is that you can actually create your own templates.
Your account information.

c] After creating your account you get immediate access to all the outputs, which include HTML and JavaScript (to display on your site), and RSS and Atom. They also give you access to a simple piece of PHP code to use to display the digest on your site, instead of JavaScript, which really doesn't do you any good for the search engines.

All in all, a great RSS radar tool. Do we have a market leader in this category here?

How to Buy RSS Advertising: Setting the Stage

Bill Flitter of Pheedo is starting a series of articles on how to buy RSS advertising, beginning with some basic background information on RSS for marketers.

RSS is poised to become an important content delivery mechanism in mainstream media. It will soon represent a permanent and fundamental change in the way information will be shared, viewed and acted upon online. It will reshape the way people interact with the web for several reasons."

"Many publishers catering to the early adopter and tech markets are seeing 40% month-over-month growth rate in their RSS traffic. Some are seeing 50% of their traffic come from their RSS feed, with a corresponding decline in email subscriptions."
